Constant Ice Cravings May Signal Common Iron Deficiency, Doctor Explains
Hindustan Times · health
A persistent and strong craving to chew or suck on ice cubes, a habit known as pagophagia, could indicate an underlying iron deficiency. Dr. G Vimal Kumar, a paediatric haematology expert, explained that while the exact reason is unclear, theories suggest chewing ice may temporarily improve alertness and concentration in those with iron deficiency anaemia. He advises that this craving should not be ignored and consulting a hematologist for blood counts and iron levels is recommended. Treating the deficiency typically resolves the craving.
