Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon rainforest has reached its lowest level since records began in 1988, with 3,335 square kilometers cleared in the 12 months through July. This represents a significant 42 percent decrease from the previous year, according to Brazil's space research agency, Inpe. Environment Minister Joao Paulo Capobianco described the drop as "stratospheric," while President Lula aims for zero illegal deforestation by 2030. This achievement comes as Lula faces a presidential run-off election.
