England Restores Lost River Mile Using Historic Maps
Times of India · environment
Conservation teams in Northumberland, England, have successfully restored a mile-long stretch of the River Breamish, bringing it closer to its natural state. Utilizing centuries-old maps from the 1600s alongside modern LiDAR technology, they identified and reconstructed the river's original winding channels. This extensive project involved excavating historic routes and reconnecting the river with its floodplain. The restoration is already proving beneficial for wildlife, with salmon and sea trout now able to navigate the reconstructed waterways towards their upstream spawning grounds.
