Punjab's Opioid Treatment Biometric System Fails Due To Technical Gaps

Hindustan Times · health

Punjab's biometric attendance system for opioid treatment centres, launched over a year ago, is facing significant technical challenges. The system, intended to verify patient identities and prevent pilferage of buprenorphine tablets, requires updated hardware and software that most centres lack. Consequently, the biometric machines remain largely unused, and patients continue to receive medication based solely on Aadhaar card verification. This failure undermines the initiative's goal of ensuring medicines reach only registered patients and curbing potential diversion.
