Karnataka Tiger Population May Exceed 700, Preliminary Count Suggests

Times of India · environment

A preliminary analysis by the Karnataka forest department suggests the state may have over 700 tigers, a significant rise from previous estimates. Using in-house software to identify unique tigers from camera trap images, officials have identified around 575 individuals across 50 forest divisions. These findings, which include tigers within and outside protected areas, will be shared with the Wildlife Institute of India for final assessment. The projected increase highlights both conservation success and growing concerns about human-tiger conflict, especially as tigers increasingly inhabit landscapes beyond reserves, leading to livestock predation.
