Karnataka Police File FIRs Over Form-7 Applications, Legality Questioned
The Hindu · india
Karnataka police have filed at least five FIRs against BJP workers for allegedly submitting bulk Form-7 applications, which the Congress claims targeted Muslim and Dalit voters. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has sole jurisdiction over electoral rolls, and only EC officials can file complaints for electoral offenses. Previously, the Andhra Pradesh government's FIR over similar issues was dissolved after the ECI objected. To bypass this, Karnataka police have invoked sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, for cheating and forgery instead of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
