The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has postponed the introduction of merchant discount rate (MDR) on select UPI person-to-merchant transactions until after Diwali, pushing back the original October 15 rollout. The decision was made by the UPI and Services Steering Committee, considering the ongoing festive season. While the implementation is delayed, a new deadline has not been set. The proposed framework would have charged merchants 0.40% MDR on UPI transactions above ₹2,000, capped at ₹300. This move had faced significant opposition from retail traders' associations.
