An experimental rewilding project for the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard has faced a significant setback in Jaisalmer. A six-month-old captive-bred male bird was killed by a desert fox on Sunday while drinking water in the Desert National Park. The bird had been released into the wild just last Wednesday. Wildlife Institute of India scientists and Forest Department officials are reviewing the release protocols and conservation measures to prevent future incidents. The remaining seven birds slated for release will not be released until these safeguards are re-evaluated.
