US Elk Gift to New Zealand in 1905 Blurs Game Animal and Pest Lines

Hindustan Times · environment

In 1905, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt gifted elk, also known as wapiti, to New Zealand. A 2026 study in Animal History by Vanessa Bateman reveals these animals' roles shifted dramatically over the 20th century. Initially introduced as game, they later became viewed as an ecological threat, and some were even integrated into farm livestock. This categorization became complicated as the elk hybridized with native red deer, creating a continuum of forms that were difficult to classify.
