Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor, ascended the throne, during a period of declining Mughal power and increasing British influence. Despite holding the title, his reign was largely symbolic, with real power resting with the British. Zafar, also a poet, expressed his melancholy and longing for his homeland in his verses. His life was marked by the weakening of his dynasty, the 1857 rebellion, and eventual exile, leaving him unable to be buried in his beloved India.
