Rare White Animals Explained: Albinism and Leucism Cause Striking Appearances

Times of India · science

Pure white animals in the wild, such as white tigers and peacocks, are genetic rarities due to conditions like albinism or leucism. Albinism causes a complete absence of melanin, resulting in pink or red eyes, while leucism involves partial pigment loss, often leaving eye color normal. White tigers, carrying a recessive gene, are estimated to occur in 1 in 10,000 births, making wild sightings extremely rare. White lions and peacocks also exhibit these traits, with white alligators being among the rarest, with fewer than 100 known worldwide.
