Study Maps Foot-and-Mouth Disease Risk Zones in Jammu and Kashmir

Mongabay India · environment

A new study in Jammu and Kashmir has identified potential risk zones for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) transmission in areas where livestock migration routes intersect with wildlife habitats. These routes, used by pastoralists during summer, bring livestock into proximity with wild ungulates like the hangul and markhor. While FMD surveillance focuses on domestic animals, wildlife is excluded. Protected areas near settlements are at critical risk due to increased interspecies contact and shared grazing grounds, raising concerns about potential disease spread.
