28,800 Rubber Ducks Lost at Sea in 1992 Still Tracked by Scientists

Times of India · science

In 1992, a cargo ship lost 12 containers in the North Pacific, spilling approximately 28,800 plastic toys, including yellow rubber ducks. These "unsinkable" toys were designed to float and have since been tracked by scientists. Oceanographers Curtis Ebbesmeyer and James Ingraham used the accidental spill to study ocean currents, a task previously difficult with limited message-in-a-bottle recoveries. The toys have washed ashore globally, aiding research into oceanographic patterns and the movement of debris across vast distances.
