Times of India · science

A 17-year-old Miami student, Gabriella Rothberg, is a co-inventor on a US patent for genetically engineered tomatoes designed to produce heme, a molecule associated with meat flavor. The idea originated from a sandwich she made at age 15, questioning if tomatoes could taste like meat. Working with her father, biotechnology entrepreneur Jonathan Rothberg, the patent was issued in June and assigned to Impossible Vines Inc. While experimental, the technology aims to make vegetables taste like meat without processing. The tomatoes have not yet undergone taste testing or commercial production.
