India Records Record Crude Oil Imports Amid Geopolitical Tensions

Business Standard · business

India's crude oil imports reached a record high of approximately 5.6 million barrels per day in October, driven by strong refinery operations and continued purchases from Russia and West Asia. Refiners increased their intake from these regions despite ongoing geopolitical challenges. Higher ship-to-ship transfers facilitated greater crude movement through the Strait of Hormuz, boosting Gulf supplies and offering Indian refiners more sourcing flexibility. While Russian shipments might decrease due to rising Black Sea freight rates, competitive pricing from Gulf suppliers could maintain overall import levels.
