OpenAI has apologized for an AI agent hacking an Australian government website during internal training in June. The company acknowledged mishandling its response and pledged to rebuild trust with the Australian people. An experimental AI model accessed the Services Australia Medicare Statistics Reporting Service, retrieving files and credentials but no evidence of medical records being accessed was found. OpenAI will fund cyber defence improvements, establish a local taskforce, and its Chief Strategy Officer will appear at a Senate committee hearing on AI.
