The Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, originally built as an astronomical observatory, has become a prominent symbol for protests over the past three decades. Constructed with red sandstone, it integrated Indian, Persian, and European astronomical expertise. Historians debate its exact construction date, with evidence suggesting around 1724 CE, commissioned by Emperor Muhammad Shah and built by Sawai Jai Singh II. While no longer used for its original astronomical purposes, the observatory's physical and metaphorical presence continues to be significant.
