The Right to Education Act, 2009, guarantees free and compulsory elementary education for children aged six to 14. It mandates neighbourhood schools within 1-3 km walking distance and requires minimum standards for buildings, toilets, and drinking water. Recent incidents in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Barmer highlight gaps where these legal promises are not being met, prompting action from the National Human Rights Commission.

शिक्षा का अधिकार अधिनियम, 2009, छह से 14 साल के बच्चों को मुफ्त और अनिवार्य प्राथमिक शिक्षा देता है। इसके तहत 1-3 किमी के दायरे में स्कूल होने चाहिए और इमारतों, शौचालयों व पीने के पानी के मानक तय हैं। लेकिन मध्य प्रदेश, राजस्थान, उत्तर प्रदेश और बाड़मेर में हाल की घटनाओं से पता चला है कि इन वादों को पूरा नहीं किया जा रहा है। इस पर राष्ट्रीय मानवाधिकार आयोग ने संज्ञान लिया है।
