World's Oldest Shipwreck Found Off Turkey's Coast

CBS News · world

Archaeologists have discovered the world's oldest known shipwreck off the coast of Turkey, dating back between 4,400 and 4,700 years. While the ship's structure is lost, its contents, including clay jars (amphorae) and stone anchors, have been remarkably preserved. Analysis suggests the 33-foot trade ship was transporting goods, possibly olive oil or wine, from the Jordan Valley westward across the Mediterranean. The discovery, made four years ago and confirmed recently, offers insights into ancient trade and seafaring life.
