No Postmortem Needed for Snakebite Insurance Claim, Rules Uttarakhand Commission

Times of India · india

The Uttarakhand State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has upheld a Rs 3 lakh insurance payout to the family of a farmer who died from a snakebite. National Insurance Company Limited had wrongly repudiated the claim, citing the absence of a postmortem report. The commission ruled that a lack of postmortem does not automatically invalidate a genuine insurance claim when other evidence confirms the cause of death. The insurer's investigator and local village head had provided statements confirming the snakebite incident, and a panchnama also supported the claim.
