Polyethylene Microplastics Linked To Fatty Liver Signs

Times of India · science

New research from Texas A&M University suggests polyethylene microplastics may worsen fatty liver disease signs. The study found exposure to these microplastics increased indicators of the condition, with effects becoming more pronounced when combined with a diet high in fat, fructose, and cholesterol. Researchers used spatial transcriptomics to examine gene activity, identifying changes in proteins regulating fat breakdown and cellular repair. While the findings suggest potential interactions between environmental exposures and dietary risks, they do not establish the extent of polyethylene's contribution to liver disease in humans.
