Coastal Andhra Fisherfolk Face Unprecedented Financial Crisis Due to Cyclones
The Hindu · india
Coastal Andhra Pradesh's marine fishing community is in an unprecedented financial crisis due to frequent low-pressure systems, depressions, and Cyclone Arnab. Compulsory fishing bans, issued by the IMD following a September 23 depression and an October 28 cyclone landfall, have paralysed trade and disrupted supply chains. Thousands of families in Visakhapatnam Urban district, reliant on numerous boats, face mounting distress, with cumulative losses exceeding ₹36 crore from bans since June. Cyclone Arnab alone caused nearly ₹20 crore in direct trade losses.
