Hong Kong Feral Cattle DNA Reveals Ancient Ancestry and Local Adaptations
Hindustan Times · science
A 2026 genome study of 30 feral Hong Kong cattle has uncovered genetic clues about their ancestry and adaptations. The research compared these animals to 116 cattle from four major populations, revealing surprisingly high genetic diversity despite their small numbers. The study found genetic signatures linked to a long history of isolation, ancient wild-bovine ancestry, and adaptation to the local environment. This feral population, numbering around 1,000, is valuable for studying how domesticated animals adapt when left to the wild without human management.
