Johnson cited deteriorating mental health as his reason for leaving the NFL after 16 seasons. Smith appeared to trivialize Johnson's decision, sparking widespread criticism. He later apologized, clarifying that he was commenting on the chaotic situation with the Eagles organization, not Johnson's personal health reasons. Smith stated he would never minimize mental health issues and that his remarks were a misunderstanding.
