India Proposes Immediate Licence Suspension For Substandard Drugmakers
Business Standard · health
India's Health Ministry is proposing to immediately suspend manufacturing licences for drugs failing quality tests. This amendment to the Drugs Rules, 1945, aims to prevent unsafe medicines from reaching the market while regulatory action is pending. Previously, a show-cause notice was required, creating a time lag where substandard drugs could remain in circulation. The proposal follows international scrutiny over contaminated Indian-made syrups linked to child deaths. Suspensions will only be revoked after manufacturers implement satisfactory corrective actions.
