Brazil Pays Fishermen To Remove Invasive Lionfish

Times of India · environment

Brazil is paying fishermen to catch invasive lionfish off the coast of Porto Seguro, Bahia, with at least 440 removed so far. Each fish earns fishermen approximately US$1.90, as part of a campaign to control the predator's spread. Researchers are examining the captured fish to understand their diet and impact on native marine life. This initiative aims to limit lionfish numbers in priority areas and gather crucial ecological data. The lionfish, native to the Indo-Pacific, poses a significant threat to biodiversity in new environments like Brazil's Abrolhos reefs.
