Asiatic Black Bear Preys on Endangered Red Panda in Himalayas

Times of India · environment

Researchers have documented the first verified photographic evidence of an Asiatic black bear preying on an endangered red panda in West Bengal's Singalila National Park. The incident, recorded at 9,000ft, raises questions about changing hibernation patterns and seasonal shifts affecting bear diets. Both species are classified as vulnerable or endangered, and this rare predation event highlights conservation challenges. The findings offer insights into how climate change may alter predator-prey dynamics in high-altitude Himalayan food webs.
