Nearly 40% of Indian Districts Saw Increased Flood Vulnerability: IIT-Roorkee Study
Times of India · science
A study by IIT-Roorkee researchers reveals that flood vulnerability increased in nearly 40% of Indian districts between 2001 and 2011. The number of districts vulnerable to both floods and droughts also rose during this period. The findings, published in npj Natural Hazards, analyzed 591 districts using socioeconomic, demographic, and infrastructure indicators. Researchers developed a Multi-Hazard Vulnerability Index to identify overlapping risks. The study emphasizes the need for district-specific disaster management strategies to address multiple hydrological hazards effectively.
