France Allows Higher Alcohol Content in Champagne

BBC World · world

Record heatwaves in France have prompted producers to temporarily raise the alcohol content in champagne to 15%, up from the usual 13% cap. Extreme heat and drought led to grapes with higher sugar levels, which yeast converts to alcohol during fermentation. This change, affecting a small number of wines from the 2026 vintage, follows the earliest harvest ever recorded in the Champagne region.
