Belagavi district administration has successfully implemented a profit-sharing formula for sugarcane pricing this season, breaking a deadlock between farmers and factories. This agreement, reportedly the first in the country based on C Rangarajan committee recommendations, allows sugar factories to commence operations. Farmers will receive a base price above the Fair and Remunerative Price, plus a share of profits. Most farmer leaders have welcomed the formula, suspending protests, though some express concerns about its speculative nature. The agreement aims to treat farmers as both suppliers and shareholders.
