Virginia Reuses Bridge Concrete for Underwater Fish Habitats
Times of India · environment
Virginia is dismantling 100,000 tons of concrete from its $3.9 billion Hampton Roads bridge-tunnel expansion project. Approximately 951 tons have already been placed underwater in Chesapeake Bay to create artificial reefs. This initiative aims to reduce landfill waste by repurposing old bridge infrastructure into habitats for marine life. The project, connecting Hampton and Norfolk, involves building new tunnels and trestle bridges, with the old concrete being transported by barge and carefully placed on the bay floor. Officials hope this reuse strategy will also prove more cost-effective than traditional disposal methods.
