Tamil Nadu has expanded its scheme providing a 1g gold ring to babies born in government hospitals. The 'Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram' scheme now covers children of women who have moved elsewhere after marriage, provided both parents remain permanent residents of the state. Previously, the mother herself had to be a permanent resident. Amendments to the scheme, launched by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, will apply to babies born from June 22, 2026. Families must submit documents proving maternal grandparents are permanent residents of Tamil Nadu.
