Nitrogen From Agriculture Fuels India's Air Pollution Crisis

A new book suggests that nitrogen, a crucial element for agriculture, is a primary driver of India's severe air pollution crisis. While often overlooked, ammonia from agricultural fertilizers, estimated at 80-85% of the total, acts as a base that reacts with acids from industrial and vehicular emissions. This reaction forms secondary pollutants like ammonium sulphate, contributing significantly to PM2.5 levels. Experts highlight that as acid rain decreases, this ammonia-driven pollution problem intensifies, impacting the health of nearly half a billion people in the Indo-Gangetic Plain.
