Tamil Nadu has requested central government assistance to establish a new ferry service connecting Rameswaram to Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. This follows the successful two-year operation of the Nagapattinam-Kankesanthurai route. The proposed service, spanning 26 nautical miles, requires bilateral agreements, immigration and customs facilities, and terminal infrastructure. The state government has urged the Union government to allocate ₹100 crore for the project, which may be undertaken under 'Sagarmala 2.0'. Environmental clearances and feasibility studies are also necessary before the project can proceed.
