German President Warns Democracy Faces Threat After 'Bitter Setbacks' Since Reunification

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has warned that democracy and international cooperation have suffered "bitter setbacks" since reunification. Speaking in his final Unity Day address, he noted that some hopes surrounding the 1990 reunification have not been fulfilled. The president pointed to the threat posed by right-wing extremism. Germany marked 36 years since reunification with celebrations in Bremen, acknowledging that significant economic and social differences between eastern and western Germany persist.
