India's Telecom Regulator Proposes Satellite Connectivity Support In Future Smartphones
Business Standard · technology
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has proposed that future smartphones sold in India must include support for satellite communication frequency bands. This recommendation is part of a broader framework to enable direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity via satellite networks. Trai suggests encouraging manufacturers to integrate necessary modules for Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) bands, potentially allowing connectivity in areas with no terrestrial network coverage. The proposal involves using L-band and S-band frequencies for satellite-to-device communication, requiring hardware changes in compatible smartphones.
