Karnataka Govt Alleges Petrol Sold With Over 30% Ethanol, Exceeding Limit

Times of India · automobile

The Karnataka government has alleged that petrol sold by major oil companies in the state contains ethanol significantly above the 20% limit, with laboratory tests revealing levels as high as 31.2%. Samples from Indian Oil, HPCL, BPCL, Nayara, and Shell showed ethanol content ranging from 25.5% to 31.2%. The government claims this excess blending could reduce vehicle mileage and damage components, as most Indian vehicles are not designed for blends above E20. They are seeking action against companies, compensation for consumers, and mandatory display of ethanol percentages at pumps.
