China Sanctions Paraguay, Belize Ministers Over Taiwan Ties

China has imposed sanctions on Paraguay's Communications Minister Gustavo Villate and Belize's Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca due to their countries' diplomatic relations with Taiwan. The sanctions, effective Monday, include freezing assets in China and denying entry visas to Hong Kong and Macau. Chinese organizations and individuals are also prohibited from transacting with the ministers. Beijing stated these actions were to safeguard its national sovereignty and oppose Taiwan separatist activities. Paraguay and Belize are among the few nations maintaining formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, which China considers its own territory.
