Fortune Cookies Originated in Japan, Not China, Despite Common Belief

TOI - Lifestyle · lifestyle

Despite being a common dessert in Chinese restaurants worldwide, fortune cookies have surprisingly little connection to China. Their origins trace back to Japan, where a similar cracker called tsujiura senbei existed as early as the 19th century. These Japanese crackers were savoury and had fortunes tucked into their edges. Japanese immigrants later brought this concept to California, where confectioners adapted it into the sweeter, vanilla-flavoured cookie known today. Several Japanese-American businesses and one Chinese-American company have competing claims regarding its modern invention.
