The Supreme Court has imposed a Rs 10 lakh penalty on the Uttar Pradesh government in connection with the Sambhal violence case. The court ruled that preventive detention cannot be ordered based solely on a purported confession made in police custody. This decision came after an accused, Mulla Afroz, challenged his detention under the National Security Act. The Allahabad High Court had previously dismissed his plea. The Supreme Court emphasized that such detentions require more substantial grounds than just alleged confessions obtained during police interrogation.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने संभल हिंसा मामले में उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार पर 10 लाख रुपये का जुर्माना लगाया है। कोर्ट ने कहा कि पुलिस हिरासत में दिए गए कथित इकबालिया बयान के आधार पर ही निवारक हिरासत का आदेश नहीं दिया जा सकता। यह फैसला तब आया जब एक आरोपी, मुल्ला अफरोज ने National Security Act के तहत अपनी हिरासत को चुनौती दी थी। इससे पहले Allahabad High Court ने उसकी याचिका खारिज कर दी थी। सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने इस बात पर जोर दिया कि ऐसी हिरासत के लिए पुलिस की पूछताछ के दौरान कथित इकबालिया बयानों से अधिक ठोस आधार की आवश्यकता होती है।
