US Cannot Claim Moon Under Treaty, Says Lunar

The United States cannot claim ownership of the Moon due to the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, according to Lunar Embassy. The treaty, ratified by nearly all countries including the US, prohibits governmental or sovereign entities from owning celestial bodies. Lunar Embassy founder Dennis Hope, however, claims ownership as an individual, citing a loophole in the treaty that does not restrict private citizens.
