AI's Massive Electricity Demand Drives Nuclear Power Deals
Al Jazeera · world
Major cloud computing firms Amazon and Google are signing long-term contracts for nuclear electricity to power their artificial intelligence operations. Amazon secured 690 megawatts from Constellation's Calvert Cliffs plant, while Google agreed to 890 megawatts of additional nuclear capacity. These deals involve increasing output from existing reactors rather than building new ones. Despite efficiency gains in AI chips, overall electricity demand continues to rise, mirroring historical patterns where increased efficiency leads to greater consumption.
