NASA's Swift Telescope Set to Plummet to Earth After Failed Rescue Mission
The Hindu - Science · science
NASA's aging Swift Observatory is on the verge of re-entering Earth's atmosphere around October 30, 2026, following a failed rescue attempt. The U.S. Space Force predicts the 1.5-ton telescope will largely burn up, but denser parts could survive and impact the ocean or land. Swaths of Africa, Australia, India, Southeast Asia, and the Americas are within the potential reentry zone. After 22 years of observing gamma ray bursts and exploding stars, the telescope's systems were shut down due to its declining orbit.
