A rare, signed copy of James Prinsep's 1833 book, 'Benares Illustrated,' which documented Varanasi's ghats, temples, and daily life through 34 illustrations, has sold for Rs 36.76 lakh. The book's sale at AstaGuru significantly surpassed its high estimate of Rs 10 lakh, fetching more than three times the expected price. Prinsep, a British scholar and artist, created the detailed visual record of the city in the early 19th century. The volume includes depictions of religious landmarks, riverfront architecture, and scenes of people engaged in their daily activities.
