South Africa has officially announced its bid to host either the 2036 or 2040 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, with Durban designated as the primary candidate city. This marks a significant effort to bring the Games to Africa for the first time since their modern inception in 1896. While Durban is the main choice, the bid may involve multiple cities, including Johannesburg and Cape Town. South Africa previously attempted to host the 2004 Games in Cape Town but was unsuccessful. The International Olympic Committee will select the 2036 host in mid-2029.
