India to Fund Deepwater Wells, Recover Aid from Oil Finders

Business Standard · business

The Indian government will fund up to 50% of deepwater exploration well costs under the Rs 84,084-crore Samudra Manthan scheme. Aid will be recovered from revenue if oil or gas is found, with the state absorbing losses for dry wells. This central bargain aims to reduce upfront exploration burdens and encourage domestic hydrocarbon discovery. The scheme supports 60 wells, with grants capped at Rs 675 crore per exploratory well and Rs 1,350 crore for stratigraphic wells, running through FY2030-31.
