US Forests Turn 'Ghost Forests' As Over 260 Million Trees Die

A new study reveals that over 260 million trees are dying in the US, creating 'ghost forests' where dead trees remain standing. While previously linked to rising sea levels and soil salinity, scientists have now identified significant tree mortality near freshwater lakes and inland areas. Researchers analyzed aerial images from 2012 to 2023, finding that prolonged waterlogging of soil deprives tree roots of oxygen, leading to their death. This phenomenon poses a threat to forest ecosystems and the wildlife they support.
