Smallpox Virus Fragments Recovered From 500-Year-Old Human Remains

Researchers have successfully recovered fragments of ancient DNA belonging to the variola virus, which causes smallpox, from the mummified remains of two Indigenous people in northern Chile. Smallpox was a devastating disease that caused widespread epidemics for centuries, with a severe form killing approximately 30% of those infected. The first documented outbreak in the Americas occurred in 1518, significantly contributing to the loss of Indigenous life during European colonisation. The World Health Organization launched an eradication program in 1967, leading to the last known natural case in 1977.
