3 Lakh People At Risk As Construction Surges In Himalayan Flood Zones

A new study reveals that approximately 300,000 people are living in areas of Nepal, South-Eastern Tibet, and parts of India's Uttarakhand that face risks of floods and glacial lake outbursts. Construction of homes, hotels, and roads in these vulnerable Himalayan regions has surged by 45% between 2016 and 2023. In areas prone to glacial lake outburst floods, construction increased by a staggering 78%. This rapid development exacerbates the danger posed by climate change-induced melting glaciers and increased rainfall, threatening lives and infrastructure.
