India's Govt Won't Regulate Airfares, May Cap Prices During Emergencies

Business Standard · business

The Indian government has no plans to regulate airline ticket prices under new rules, a senior official stated. While the market will continue to determine fares based on demand and supply, the government reserves the right to impose fare caps during extraordinary situations like natural disasters. Airlines will need to submit fare structures to the DGCA a month in advance. This move aims to ensure passenger affordability without interfering with the free market mechanism, despite recent fare hikes driven by rising fuel costs and demand.
